Lyon's Festival of Lights is an annual celebration steeped in magic, tradition and creativity. Every year, from 8 to 10 December, the city is transformed into a veritable spectacle of lights, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world. The tradition dates back to the 19th century and has become one of the city's most emblematic events.

The origins of the Festival of Lights date back to 1852. Originally scheduled for 8 December to celebrate the inauguration of a statue of the Virgin Mary on Fourvière hill, the festival took on a special significance when the people of Lyon spontaneously lit candles in their windows to honour the Virgin. This action was a symbolic gesture of unity and faith, marking the beginning of the tradition of the Festival of Lights.

Today, the Festival of Lights has become a major artistic event. Local and international artists are invited to create spectacular light installations in different areas of Lyon. The city's iconic monuments, such as Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica, Saint-Jean Cathedral and Place des Terreaux, are highlighted by extraordinary light displays.

Locals and visitors alike stroll through the illuminated streets, amazed by the creative light installations that transform the city into a living tableau. Musical entertainment, street shows and artistic performances complete the experience, creating a festive and joyful atmosphere. The façades of buildings are adorned with light projections, creating ephemeral tableaux that tell stories and transport spectators into a magical world.

Each edition of the Festival of Lights has its own theme, bringing an artistic and narrative dimension to the event. Lighting designers compete in ingenuity to surprise and amaze the public. Some use cutting-edge technologies, such as video-mapping, to transform entire facades into living canvases, while others prefer more traditional installations with candles and lanterns.

Aside from the light installations, Lyon's gastronomy also plays a key role during the Fête des Lumières. The streets come alive with stalls offering local specialities, giving visitors the chance to sample delicious food while enjoying the festive atmosphere.

Lyon's Fête des Lumières transcends the boundaries of visual art to become a collective celebration of creativity, light and community. This unique event continues to amaze and bring people together, making Lyon the world's capital of lights for a few days each year. The Festival of Lights is much more than just a light show; it's a celebration of the culture, history and festive spirit that characterise the city of Lyon.
