Saint John Bosco, commonly known as Don Bosco, is an emblematic figure of the 19th-century Catholic Church, renowned for his dedication to young people and his revolutionary educational work

His life is a shining testimony of faith, love and dedication to the most vulnerable in society.

Born on 16 August 1815 in Castelnuovo d'Asti, in Piedmont, Italy, John Bosco grew up in a modest and pious family. Despite his family's economic difficulties, he showed remarkable intelligence and determination, which enabled him to gain access to education and pursue his religious vocation.

From an early age, John Bosco felt God's call to serve young people, particularly the most disadvantaged and marginalised. Inspired by his dream of becoming a priest, he overcame many obstacles and was ordained a priest in 1841. Shortly after his ordination, he founded the Society of Saint Francis de Sales, also known as the Salesians of Don Bosco, dedicated to the education and training of young people.

Don Bosco developed an innovative approach to education, emphasising love, kindness and prevention rather than punishment. He firmly believed that every young person had immense potential and deserved a second chance, whatever their situation. He opened orphanages, vocational schools and training centres to give young people the skills and opportunities they needed to succeed in life.

His teaching method, known as the "Preventive System", combined reason, religion and love, aiming to shape honest, hard-working and pious young people. He was convinced that education should be holistic, taking into account not only the intellect, but also the heart and soul of each individual.

Don Bosco was also a tireless missionary, devoting his life to evangelising and serving the most marginalised people in society. He founded missions, oratories and parishes to meet the spiritual needs of disadvantaged communities, preaching the Gospel with zeal and compassion.

His life is a living example of Christ's love for the young and oppressed. He devoted every moment of his life to doing God's will, constantly seeking to spread the joy of the Gospel and transform society through education and charity.

St John Bosco died on 31 January 1888, leaving behind him an immense spiritual legacy and a lasting influence on the Church and society. He was canonised by Pope Pius XI in 1934 and is venerated as the patron saint of young people, educators and apprentices.

Today, Don Bosco's work and legacy continue to inspire millions of people around the world, reminding us of the importance of education, compassion and faith in building a better world for all.
