A day that is often overlooked
In the midst of Holy Week, Holy Monday sometimes goes unnoticed. After the triumphant entry on Palm Sunday, this day seems quieter. Yet it marks an important stage in the last days of Jesus' life. The Gospel presents us with the anointing at Bethany. A woman pours precious perfume on Jesus' feet and wipes them with her hair. This gesture surprises and even shocks some of the disciples.
Love that gives without calculation
The perfume poured out represents something precious, almost excessive. For some, it is wasteful. For Jesus, it is a preparation for his Passion.
Holy Monday speaks to us of a love that does not calculate. A love that dares to give without measure.
It also asks us: what are we willing to offer? Do we give God what we have left, or what is valuable?
A contrast with betrayal
In the Gospel accounts, this moment of love is contrasted with Judas' betrayal. While one heart gives itself generously, another closes itself off.
Holy Monday places us before this inner choice. To move towards the light or to let ourselves be overcome by the shadows.
This day invites us to examine our own fidelity.
A time to purify our intentions
At the beginning of Holy Week, Holy Monday is an ideal time to re-examine our motivations.
Why do we follow Christ?
Is it out of habit, tradition, or sincere love?
Like the perfume poured out in Bethany, our actions can become an offering if they are done with a true heart.
One step closer to the cross
Holy Monday brings us gradually closer to the Passion. The tension rises in the stories. The opposition grows stronger. The path to the cross becomes clearer.
But this day reminds us that love always precedes sacrifice.
Before suffering, there is the gift.
Prayer for Holy Monday
Lord Jesus,
on this Holy Monday,
teach me to love you without calculation.
Purify my intentions
and make my heart generous.
May my life become a sincere offering.
Amen.
