A number that appears throughout the Bible
The number forty is no coincidence in Christian tradition. It appears strikingly throughout the Bible, always linked to a time of trial, preparation or transformation. The forty days of Lent are therefore not just a symbolic framework. They are part of a much older history, deeply rooted in faith.
The Flood, the desert and patience
In the Old Testament, it rains for forty days and forty nights during the Flood. This period marks a purification, but also a new beginning.
The people of Israel wandered in the desert for forty years before entering the Promised Land. This long period was not a punishment, but a learning experience. It was a journey of maturation, trust and dependence on God.
Moses remained on the mountain for forty days before receiving the tablets of the Law. Here again, forty days signified preparation and encounter with God.
Jesus in the desert
In the New Testament, the number takes on an even stronger dimension. Before beginning his public mission, Jesus spent forty days in the desert, fasting and praying.
It is this passage that directly inspires the duration of Lent. Christians are invited to follow Christ in this time of inner desert. A time to face temptations, clarify priorities and strengthen faith.
The desert is not an empty place. It is a place of truth.
Forty days to transform oneself
The number forty symbolises a complete cycle of transformation. It is neither too short to be superficial nor too long to be discouraging.
Forty days allow us to establish new habits, take a step back, and let our hearts evolve gradually.
Lent is not an isolated spiritual interlude. It is a path to Easter. A path that requires effort, but leads to light.
A number of hope
In the Bible, after each period of forty days or forty years, something new begins. A covenant, a promise, a mission.
The forty days of Lent remind us that trials are never the end. They always prepare us for renewal.
What if these forty days became, this year, the beginning of a profound change?
Prayer for the season of Lent
Lord,
accompany me during these forty days.
Give me the strength to persevere.
Help me to transform my efforts into love.
May this time of desert become a time of encounter.
Lead me to the joy of Easter.
Amen.
