The oil of Saint Joseph: history and spiritual uses

A discreet but powerful tradition

St Joseph's oil is a devotion that is still little known to the general public, but precious to many of the faithful. It has its roots in the spiritual history of the shrine of Saint Joseph in Montreal, Canada, and in the life of Saint Brother André, a humble porter who became an instrument of countless graces.

Much more than a simple pious object, this blessed oil is a sign of faith, trust and intercession, and accompanies prayers for healing, comfort and conversion.

Origin: the testimony of Brother André

It was in the early 20th century that the tradition of St Joseph's oil took shape. Brother André Bessette, a religious of the Congrégation de la Sainte-Croix in Montreal, was deeply devoted to Saint Joseph. His modest mission was to welcome visitors at the college door.

But this discreet doorman soon became known for his fervent prayer and the cures that seemed to follow his intercession. He claimed nothing for himself: "It is St Joseph who heals," he would repeat.

To manifest his prayer, Brother André used blessed olive oil, which he would place on the sick with faith, while praying to St Joseph. This oil, which he took from a lamp burning in front of a statue of the saint, became the humble medium for a profound act of faith. Many people reported being relieved, consoled or even cured.

A spiritual, not magical, use

St Joseph's oil is not a miraculous remedy in the magical sense. It does not replace medicine or the sacraments. It is a sacramental sign: it disposes the heart to receive God's grace, like holy water or a medal.

It is blessed by a priest, and used in a prayerful setting, with humility and faith. It can be applied to the forehead, the hands, a suffering part of the body, or used to bless an object, a door, a bed, invoking the intercession of Saint Joseph.

It is particularly used to:

- accompany prayer for healing

- soothe physical or moral suffering

- protect a place or a person

- entrust a difficult intention to Saint Joseph

How to use it?

There is no rigid ritual, but here is a simple and respectful approach:

- Make a sign of the cross

- Apply the oil to yourself or a person with faith, in silence or while reciting a prayer

- Invoke Saint Joseph, for example with these words:Saint Joseph, protector of families, guardian of the sick, pray for us and intercede with the Lord that we may be strengthened in faith and healed according to his will.

You can also recite a prayer, read a psalm, or simply remain in silence.

An incarnate faith

In our modern world, this oil reminds us that the Christian faith comes through concrete gestures: touching, blessing, entrusting. It helps us to express with the body what the soul believes, and to experience a sensitive closeness to the saints.

It invites us to pray to Saint Joseph not as a distant figure, but as a father, a protector, a faithful intercessor.

Concluding prayer

Saint Joseph,

You who watched over Jesus and Mary with love,

You who healed so many hearts through your intercession,

Accompany me in my trials,

And bring down God's peace upon me.

May this blessed oil be the sign of my trust,

And through it may the Lord heal, console and strengthen.

Saint Joseph, pray for us.

Amen.
