A fellow traveller in the faith

In the Catholic Church, the patron saint is not simply a venerated or admired figure. He is a true companion on our journey, a model of faith, an intercessor who watches over us. Choosing a patron saint for your spiritual life is like entrusting yourself to a friend from Heaven, who has experienced struggles similar to our own and who can help us move forward on the path to God.

The patron saint is chosen not for his popularity, but for the resonance he creates in our hearts. He or she is not a distant hero, but a brother or sister in the faith, whom we come to know and love.

Looking for closeness of heart or vocation

There are several ways of discerning which saint might be our spiritual patron. Some choose by first name or date of birth. Others turn to a saint who shares their state in life (married, religious, student, parent, worker...), their mission, or an aspect of their history.

We can also choose a saint whose life, struggles or spirituality echo our own journey. For example, someone who is wounded inside may feel close to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux or Saint John of the Cross. Someone involved in caring may pray to Saint Jeanne Jugan or Saint Camille de Lellis.

It's not us who always finds the saint: sometimes it's the saint who "calls" to us in the course of a reading, a meeting or a prayer.

Be inspired by his life and talk to him

Once you feel a closeness to a saint, it's good to delve deeper into his life, his words, his writings if he has any. This bond is not purely intellectual: it becomes spiritual. We can talk to him as if he were a friend from heaven, confiding in him our difficulties, our decisions, our fatigue, our doubts.

The patron saint is not there to do everything for us, but to guide us towards Christ. He supports us, inspires us, reminds us that holiness is possible, even at the heart of our frailties.

Dedicating ourselves to his intercession

We can dedicate our life or a particular time (such as a year or a project) to a saint. This does not mean worshipping him or her, but entrusting ourselves to his or her prayer, as we would ask a close friend to pray for us. Many of the faithful also choose a "saint of the year" whom they invoke particularly during twelve months.

This bond with a saint creates a beautiful spiritual friendship, which grows over time. He becomes a light in the darkness, a breath in the effort, a mirror of God's tenderness.
