The Ascension is a fundamental event in the Christian faith. It refers to the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven, forty days after his resurrection, before the eyes of his disciples. Celebrated each year on the Solemnity of the Ascension, this spiritual reality does not mark a disappearance of Christ, but a transformation of his presence. For Christians, the Ascension is at once a celebration of the glory of the risen Christ, a source of mission and a promise of hope.

A bodily and spiritual elevation

In the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, the Ascension is described as a moment when Jesus, after teaching his disciples for forty days, gathered them together one last time to give them his instructions. Then, "before their eyes, he rose, and a cloud came and hid him from their sight" (Acts 1:9). This was not a simple departure, but a physical and spiritual elevation. Jesus does not evaporate: he enters the glory of God with his glorified body.

For Christians, this ascent into heaven means that Jesus, true God and true man, is now established in divine glory, seated at the right hand of the Father. He does not leave his disciples, but he changes the way he is present. He will no longer be seen physically, but will from now on be present everywhere, through his Spirit. The Ascension thus marks the passage from a visible presence to an invisible, but real and active presence.

Christ crowned in his glory

The Ascension is first and foremost the glorification of Christ. After the humiliation of the cross, after suffering and death, the risen Jesus is lifted up to heaven. He receives full recognition of his divinity and his mission: he is Lord of the universe, King of heaven and earth. His ascension is the crowning achievement of his work of salvation. For Christians, this means that Jesus is not a mere prophet of the past, but a living Lord who reigns in the present and acts in the world. He intercedes for humanity with the Father, and he prepares a place for those who put their trust in him. This glorification of Christ is therefore also a promise: one day, those who have walked in his footsteps will share in his glory.

A feast of hope

The Ascension is not a farewell, but a beginning. It opens the time of the Church, the time we are still living today, between the Ascension and Christ's return. Jesus said to his disciples: "You will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth". He promises them the coming of the Holy Spirit, and sends them on mission. This departure is therefore also a sending: the disciples become messengers of salvation, bearers of the Good News.

For believers, the Ascension is an invitation to raise our eyes to heaven, without fleeing from the world. It reminds us that our lives are not limited to earth, but are called to a heavenly destiny. It encourages us to live from now on as sons and daughters of heaven, not to lose heart, to stand firm in the faith, even in the midst of trials.

A liturgy that expresses Easter joy

The feast of the Ascension is celebrated with solemnity in the Christian liturgy, particularly in the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches. It takes place on the fortieth day after Easter, often on a Thursday, and expresses the joy of the prolonged resurrection. The biblical readings evoke Jesus' departure and the promise of the Spirit, while the songs celebrate the kingship of the glorified Christ.

The Church invites us to meditate on Christ's faithfulness, on his promise to be with us always "to the end of the age", and on the hope of eternal life. It is a luminous feast, reminding us that heaven is not a distant dream, but a reality to which we are called.

The Ascension of the Lord is much more than a one-off event: it is a mystery that transforms the way believers look at the world and their own lives. For Christians, the Ascension means that Jesus is alive, that he reigns in glory, and that he remains present through his Spirit. It gives meaning to our mission on earth, while directing our hope towards heaven. By celebrating the Ascension, Christians proclaim that the risen Christ does not abandon us, but that he leads us to follow him, towards the fullness of life with God.
