St Leo I, also known as Leo the Great, was one of the most eminent popes of the Catholic Church. He played a crucial role during the fifth century, a period when the Church was facing major theological challenges and political upheaval.Leon was probably born in Tuscany, Italy, around 400, and became pope in 440.
