Saint Helen, also known as Saint Helen of Constantinople, is an emblematic figure of Christianity, recognized for her important role in the discovery of the True Cross and her dedication to the Christian faith
Her life is an inspiring testimony of piety, determination and service to God.
Helena was born around 250 AD into a modest family in Drepanum, a small town in Bithynia, in what is now Turkey. Despite her humble origins, she was destined to become an influential figure in Christian history.
After marrying Constantine I, who later became the Roman emperor Constantine the Great, Helen became empress of the Roman Empire. Although she lived in an era marked by political intrigue and conflict, she remained deeply rooted in her Christian faith and played a decisive role in promoting Christianity in the Roman Empire.
One of the most defining moments in St Helena's life was her discovery of the True Cross, the wood on which Jesus Christ is said to have been crucified. In 326 AD, at the ripe old age of 76, Helen undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where she supervised archaeological excavations that led to the discovery of the Holy Cross. This discovery strengthened the faith of Christians and marked a turning point in the history of Christianity.
In addition to her quest for the True Cross, St Helena also founded numerous churches and monasteries in the Holy Land and contributed to the spread of the Christian faith throughout the Roman Empire. She was a protector of persecuted Christians and worked to build churches and places of worship across the Empire.
Saint Helen died around 330 AD, leaving behind a lasting spiritual legacy. She has been venerated as a saint by both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and her feast day is celebrated on 21 May.
The life of Saint Helen reminds us of the importance of faith, devotion and service to God. She is a living example of perseverance, generosity and determination in the pursuit of Christian truth and the promotion of peace and justice in the world.
Still today, Saint Helena continues to inspire millions of the faithful around the world, reminding us of the importance of seeking God in our daily lives and devoting our time and talents to building God's Kingdom on earth.
