Saint Romain, an emblematic figure in monastic history and Christian spirituality, embodies the virtues of devotion, discipline and charity. Born in the 5th century in the region of Gaul, he is often referred to as Romain de Condat or Romain le Grand, to distinguish him from other saints of the same name.
From an early age, Romain showed a deep interest in the religious life and devoted himself to the study of the Holy Scriptures and to prayer. As an adult, he decided to retire to the solitude of the Jura mountains, near the town of Condat, where he led a life of asceticism and contemplation. It was here that he founded the monastery of Condat, which would later become famous as the monastery of Saint Claude, in honour of his successor, Saint Claude of Besançon.
The monastic rule he established is renowned for its rigour and simplicity. It emphasised prayer, manual work and charity towards the poor. Under his enlightened leadership, the monastery prospered and attracted many disciples in search of a spiritual life.
But Saint Romain's fame was not limited to his monastic foundation. His reputation for holiness and wisdom attracted the attention of the ecclesiastical authorities of his day. He was often called upon to advise bishops and princes, and his word was respected as much for its spiritual depth as for its political insight.

It is said that he had the power to heal the sick, calm storms, and even cast out demons. After a life entirely devoted to God and the service of his brothers and sisters, Saint Romain died peacefully in his monastery, surrounded by his disciples.
