Holy Week

Prayer
Post

Holy Week is at the heart of the Christian faith. It marks the final days of Jesus’ life, from his entry into Jerusalem to his resurrection. During this period, believers are invited to follow the events of the Passion step by step, to reflect on the meaning of sacrifice, love and forgiveness, and to prepare themselves inwardly for the joy of Easter. It is a time that is both solemn and profound, where light and shadow, suffering and hope intertwine, leading everyone to spiritual renewal.

Palm Sunday

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday. This day commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He is welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd waving palm branches and cheering his arrival. This gesture symbolises the recognition of Jesus as king and Messiah. However, this joy already foreshadows the Passion to come, for the crowd cheering him today will be the same crowd that, a few days later, will demand his crucifixion. It is a day marked by the duality of glory and suffering.

Holy Monday

Holy Monday brings to mind several episodes, notably Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem. He drives out the merchants and condemns the transformation of the sacred place into a marketplace. This powerful gesture reminds us of the importance of purity of heart and respect for God. This day calls for inner conversion and the purification of one’s spiritual life.

Holy Tuesday

Holy Tuesday is often associated with Jesus’ teachings in the Temple. He foretells the events to come and warns against betrayal. He emphasises faithfulness, vigilance and love. It is a day for reflection on our own commitment and our ability to remain faithful in difficult times.

Holy Wednesday

Holy Wednesday is marked by Judas’ betrayal. He decides to hand Jesus over to the authorities for thirty pieces of silver. This day highlights the tragedy of sin, but also human frailty. It invites us to reflect on trust, loyalty and the consequences of our choices.

Holy Thursday

Holy Thursday is a pivotal moment. It commemorates the Last Supper, Jesus’ final meal with his disciples. During this meal, Jesus institutes the Eucharist by sharing bread and wine, symbols of his body and blood. He also washes his disciples’ feet, a gesture of humility and service. This day highlights brotherly love and self-sacrifice. It also marks the beginning of the Passion.

Good Friday

Good Friday is a day of deep contemplation. It commemorates the Passion and crucifixion of Jesus. Condemned to death, he carries his cross to Golgotha where he is crucified. This day is marked by suffering, sacrifice and absolute love. Jesus gives his life for the salvation of humanity. Christians observe this time in silence, prayer and meditation.

Holy Saturday

Holy Saturday is a day of silence and waiting. Jesus lies in the tomb. The Church reflects on this suspended moment, between death and resurrection. It is a time of faith, even in the darkness, and of hope in the victory of life over death.

Easter Sunday

Holy Week concludes with Easter Sunday, the most important day in Christianity. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. The tomb is empty, death has been conquered, and a new life begins. This day is an explosion of joy, a symbol of hope, renewal and the victory of light over darkness.

Holy Week is an intense spiritual journey leading from joy to suffering, and then to light. It invites every believer to experience these events inwardly, to reflect on their own life and to renew their faith.
