The Virgin Mary has a unique place in Christian tradition. She is neither a secondary figure nor a simple symbol of gentleness. Her mission runs through the entire history of salvation. From the earliest biblical accounts to the life of the Church today, Mary is recognised as the one who accompanies, protects and leads believers to Christ.

To understand the mission of the Virgin Mary is to better understand the very heart of the Christian faith.

Mary, chosen to cooperate with God's plan

Mary's first mission is to have agreed to cooperate freely with God's plan. At the Annunciation, she did not submit to the divine will. She gave her full consent. Her "yes" opens up a new path in human history.

According to Christian tradition, Mary thus becomes God's collaborator. She did not replace Christ, but enabled him to enter the world. Her mission is profoundly linked to that of Jesus, without ever merging with it.

Mary shows that God respects human freedom and that he acts with those who are willing to put their trust in him.

Mary, mother of the Saviour and spiritual mother of believers

By giving birth to Jesus, Mary receives the mission of being the Mother of God. But this maternity went far beyond the event in Bethlehem. On the cross, Jesus entrusted Mary to the whole of humanity. From that moment on, Christian tradition recognises her as a spiritual mother for all believers.

Mary's mission is to accompany, console and guide those who seek God. She intercedes, protects and supports the faithful in their trials.

Mary never draws anyone to herself. She always leads towards her Son.

Mary, model of faith, obedience and humility

Christian tradition sees Mary as a model for all believers. Her mission is also educational. She taught by her life more than by her words.

Mary lived a simple and profound faith. She welcomes what she does not yet understand. She moves forward into the darkness with confidence. She accepts joy as well as suffering without turning away from God.

Through her, the Church learns that holiness is lived out in daily fidelity, in silence and in abandonment.

Mary, mediatrix of prayer and hope

In Christian tradition, Mary also has the mission of interceding for men. Believers turn to her to confide their sorrows, their joys and their hopes.

This mission of intercession does not make her a rival of God, but an attentive mother who presents our prayers to her Son. She is the one who encourages, soothes and reminds us of divine mercy.

Mary is thus a presence of consolation and hope at the heart of Christian life.

Virgin Mary,
you who agreed to serve God's plan,
teach us to say yes with confidence.
Help us to walk in faith,
