The International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes: faith, fraternity and remembrance

Every year in May, the town of Lourdes hosts a unique and deeply moving event: the International Military Pilgrimage (PMI). This gathering of soldiers from all over the world transcends borders, uniforms and languages. It unites soldiers, the wounded, chaplains, families and young recruits around the same faith, the same hope, in a place charged with peace and spirituality: the sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Lourdes.

A history born of war and reconciliation

The International Military Pilgrimage has its origins in the post-war period. In 1945, as Europe tried to heal its wounds, French and German servicemen met at Lourdes, driven by a desire for reconciliation. It was in this climate of fragile but sincere peace that the idea of a military pilgrimage took shape. In 1958, to mark the centenary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous, the first official PMI was organised. It brought together military personnel from several allied nations in a spirit of peace and prayer.

Since then, the pilgrimage has become a not-to-be-missed annual event, today bringing together around 12,000 military personnel and civilians from over 40 different countries. It is organised under the aegis of the Diocese of the French Armed Forces and the Sanctuary of Lourdes, with the support of the military chaplaincies of each country.

A pilgrimage with many dimensions

The PMI is much more than just a religious event. It is at the crossroads of several realities: spiritual, human, fraternal, remembrance and intercultural.

On a spiritual level, the pilgrimage allows military personnel to take a break from their often demanding and painful commitment to recharge their faith. Times of prayer, masses, processions (including the torch-lit Marian procession), confessions and sacraments punctuate these intense few days. The sanctuary becomes a haven of peace where everyone can lay down their suffering, their inner struggles, their grief, but also their thanksgiving.

On a human level, the PMI is an overwhelming encounter. Soldiers wounded physically or psychologically, often scarred by conflict, find a form of comfort and healing at Lourdes. Contact with the sick, hospital volunteers, chaplains and the faithful enables them to forge deep bonds. Sharing experiences across countries and generations creates a unique fraternity, nurtured by mutual respect and caring.

Symbolically, the pilgrimage embodies peace. It brings together military personnel who, in other circumstances, might have found themselves in opposition. At Lourdes, they pray together, walk together, meditate together, in a testimony to the universality of the Christian faith and the sincere search for a more fraternal world.

A highlight for young enlisted personnel

The PMI is also an opportunity for many young enlisted personnel - often from military schools, the gendarmerie, the navy, or the army and air force - to have a powerful experience. Many of them discover a spiritual dimension they never imagined they had. The marches, the prayer vigils, the informal meetings with soldiers from other nations or those wounded in war, are all opportunities to question and deepen their vocation to service.

Ceremonies that touch hearts

Several moments during the pilgrimage leave a particular mark on the participants. The international mass at the underground basilica of St Pius X, celebrated in several languages and carried by military bands, is a striking moment of communion. The torch-lit Marian procession, the ceremony blessing the wounded, and the Way of the Cross bring thousands of military personnel and pilgrims together in meditation.

More festive moments also punctuate the PMI: concerts, intercultural encounters, parades of military bands... Far from being an austere interlude, this pilgrimage is a joyful, lively, deeply human event.

A mission of peace in a troubled world

In a world marked by conflict, division and violence, the PMI appears as a prophetic sign. It is a reminder that peace can never be taken for granted, but must be built patiently, both collectively and from within. By committing themselves to the defence of their peoples, soldiers carry an immense burden. At Lourdes, they find a place to lay down this burden, entrust their missions to the Virgin Mary, and refocus on what is essential.

The International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes is not just another religious event. It is a living testimony to faith, fraternity, peace and hope. It shows that even within armies, often associated with strength and duty, there is a place for prayer, vulnerability, silence and faith. Lourdes thus becomes, for a few days, a camp of universal fraternity, where men and women in uniform find themselves united by something greater: God's call to love, to serve, and to build peace.
