Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most venerated Marian figures, particularly in Latin America. Her story begins in December 1531, when the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to the young indigenous Mexican Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill, near Mexico City. She spoke his language, Nahuatl, and asked him to convince the bishop to build a church there. To prove this apparition, Mary made roses bloom in the middle of winter, which Juan Diego put in his tilma (cloak). When he presented them to the bishop, a miraculous image of the Virgin appeared on the cloth, which became an emblematic symbol. Our Lady of Guadalupe is venerated as the patron saint of the Americas and a symbol of unity, hope and social justice, embodying the encounter between indigenous and Christian cultures. Her feast day is celebrated on 12 December.
