Saint Bernadette Soubirous was moved by the Virgin Mary on the day of the ninth apparition, 25 February 1858. She said to the young girl: ‘Go and drink from the spring and wash yourself’. Bernadette then uncovered a muddy spring, unknown until then, from which came the precious water of Lourdes. Several inhabitants of Lourdes and the surrounding area were miraculously cured by contact with this water. Since then, Lourdes water has been used to supply the Sanctuary's fountains. It is free and open to all, and many pilgrims are keen to bring some back with them. Its miraculous nature is based on faith. The water is free; you only pay for the bottle and the water carrier.
