Saint Philomena was a young Christian martyr whose story has inspired many of the faithful. Her relics were discovered in 1802 in the catacombs of Priscilla in Rome. The tombstone bore the inscription ‘Pax Tecum Filumena’, as well as symbols evoking martyrdom: an anchor, an arrow and a lily. Refusing a forced marriage, she is said to have been cruelly tortured before her death. Although no direct historical evidence confirms her existence, her popularity spread thanks to miracles attributed to her intercession, including the healing of many sick people.
She was canonised by a decree of devotion in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI, becoming a figure of prayer for desperate causes and faithful souls.
