In ancient times, nard oil (or spikenard) was one of the most prized aromatic products, already known in Egypt, the Orient and Rome. Among the Jewish populations, nard was used both in fumigations and as an ointment, as well as for the sacred mixture in the temple.
It is mentioned three times in the Song of Solomon and is associated with the figure of Mary of Bethany, who smeared Jesus' feet with this fragrant oil and wiped them with her hair.
