The story of the Our Lady of Délivrande-church began long before it was founded. During a stormy voyage to Martinique, Abbé Le Herpeur vowed to found a church in Martinique in honour of the Great Patron Saint, Notre-Dame de la Délivrande, if his ship was not wrecked. Arriving on the island and forced to take refuge on the wild heights of Morne Rouge to escape the yellow fever epidemic that was raging, the abbot decided to honour his vow. Some time later, the disease disappeared and the abbot decided to name his chapel ‘Notre-Dame de la Délivrande’.
