Job's tears are the seeds of a tropical plant called Coix lacryma-jobi, found in South-East Asia, India and South America. Their natural shape is reminiscent of drops or pearls, and they are often grey, black or ivory in colour, with a central hole that makes them easy to thread.
The name ‘Job's tears’ refers to the biblical character Job, known for his faithfulness to the Lord despite the suffering he endured. The symbolic link with tears is therefore strong: these seeds can be seen as an invitation to meditate on suffering, consolation and prayer in times of trial.
