During the First World War, the American government manufactured and distributed combat rosaries to all its soldiers. This rosary featured a very special cross: the Cross of Forgiveness. In fact, as early as 1905, Pope St. Pius X declared that anyone who wears or embraces the Cross of Forgiveness receives an indulgence of forgiveness for himself or herself and for the souls in purgatory.
